The QR Code Generator That Keeps Your GA4 Clean
Most QR tools print a code and lose the attribution. This one builds the UTM-tagged link first, enforces the values GA4 actually recognizes, then generates a print-ready code. Free, unlimited, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Tag It, Then Print It
Build the link on the left; the QR code updates on the right. Everything runs in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.
1. Destination and campaign tags
Your tagged link
Your tagged link appears here as you type.
This URL is getting long. Longer URLs make denser, harder-to-scan codes: shorten the path or use a short link before printing small.
2. Your QR code
Enter a destination URL and your QR code renders here.
SVG scales infinitely and is what print vendors want; PNG covers digital use. Always test-scan the exported code at final print size on more than one phone before a print run.
Why the Medium List Is Locked Down
GA4 sorts your traffic into channels with a fixed, published rule set you cannot edit. One wrong utm_medium and a whole campaign lands in Unassigned. The dropdown above only offers values that hit a real channel, mapped to Google’s own rules.
| You want GA4 to report | Use this utm_medium | The rule it satisfies |
|---|---|---|
email | source or medium equals email | |
| Paid Search | cpc | search-site source plus a paid medium (cp*, ppc, paid*) |
| Paid Social | paid_social | social-site source plus a paid medium |
| Organic Social | social | social source, or medium in Google’s social list |
| Display | display | medium in display, banner, interstitial, cpm |
| Affiliates | affiliate | medium equals affiliate |
| Referral | referral | medium in referral, app, link |
| Video | video | medium contains video |
| SMS | sms | source or medium equals sms |
| Print / QR | qr | No built-in channel: pick one value, use it everywhere, then build a custom channel group in GA4 (Admin → Data display → Channel groups) |
Do not hand-tag Google Ads URLs with this tool. Google Ads auto-tagging (gclid) takes priority in GA4 and stacking manual UTMs on top can misattribute the click. Use this tool for the channels auto-tagging never covers: email, organic social, print, QR, affiliates, and PR.
Print Rules the Tool Already Follows
Built into the defaults, spelled out here so your print vendor can check the math.
The 10:1 rule
Minimum code width is the scan distance divided by 10. Arm’s length needs 2-2.5 cm; a poster read from a meter needs 10 cm; a 3 m banner needs 30 cm.
Never below 2 cm in print
Smaller than 2 cm (0.8 in) and phone cameras start failing, whatever the resolution.
Dark on light, always
Cameras read luminance. Navy on white scans; inverted light-on-dark codes fail on meaningful shares of devices.
Quiet zone is non-negotiable
The blank margin around the code (4 modules) is part of the spec. This tool bakes it in; never crop it off.
SVG for print, 300 DPI+ for PNG
Vector files stay crisp at any size. If you must use PNG, export large; the download sizes above are matched to their use case.
Shorter URLs scan better
Every extra character adds modules and density. Keep paths short and let the UTM tags do the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my QR scans show up as Direct or Unassigned in GA4?
Either the printed URL carried no UTM tags, or the utm_medium value does not match any GA4 channel rule. Tag every printed link with a consistent convention such as utm_source=qr_code and utm_medium=qr, then create a custom channel group in GA4 that maps that medium to its own channel.
What size should a printed QR code be?
Divide the expected scanning distance by 10. Business cards and flyers read at arm’s length need at least 2 to 2.5 cm; a poster read from a meter needs about 10 cm; a trade-show banner read from 3 meters needs about 30 cm. Never print below 2 cm, and always test-scan at final size.
Why does the tool lowercase my UTM values?
GA4 is case-sensitive at the data layer: Email and email become two separate rows. Lowercasing everything and replacing spaces is the cheapest way to keep attribution clean. There is a toggle if you have a deliberate exception.
Can I use this for Google Ads links?
No. Google Ads auto-tagging appends a gclid that GA4 prioritizes over manual UTMs, and stacking both can misattribute clicks. Use this tool for everything auto-tagging cannot see: email, organic social, print and QR, affiliates, and PR.
Is anything I type uploaded or stored?
No. The tool is client-side: URL building, QR generation, and downloads all happen in your browser. There is no file upload, nothing is saved between visits, and nothing you type ever leaves your device.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
SVG for anything printed: it is vector, scales infinitely, and is what designers and print vendors want. PNG works for screens, decks, and email. If a print workflow demands raster, export the largest size and confirm 300 DPI at final size.
