Cost Per Lead (CPL) Calculator
Cost per lead from spend and leads, extended to the number that actually matters: cost per customer at your close rate.

Price the Lead, Then the Customer
CPL is a checkpoint, not a verdict. The close-rate extension is where the verdict lives.

A lead price means nothing in isolation. Close rate and sale value decide whether a $50 lead is cheap or ruinous: that is the arithmetic the cost-per-customer line adds.
How This Calculator Works
Cost per lead is spend divided by leads: $4,000 that generated 80 leads is a $50 CPL, which is also 20 leads per $1,000 of budget. Forecasting before launch works from the two numbers you can estimate: CPL equals cost per click divided by the visitor-to-lead conversion rate, and $4.00 clicks converting at 8% lands on the same $50. So far, arithmetic. The part competing pages skip is that a lead price means nothing in isolation: $50 is a bargain for one business and a slow bleed for another, and the difference is what happens after the lead exists.
Close rate is the bridge. Divide CPL by your lead-to-customer close rate and you get cost per customer: $50 leads closing at 25% mean each customer costs $200 to acquire. Now the number has a verdict in it, because $200 against your sale value and margin is a decision you can actually make. These defaults are deliberately the same numbers the PPC budget calculator uses, so the two tools read as one funnel: this page prices the lead you are buying today, that page sizes the budget for the revenue you want next quarter.
The formula
| What | The math |
|---|---|
| CPL from results | ad spend ÷ leads |
| CPL forecast | CPC ÷ visitor-to-lead rate |
| Cost per customer | CPL ÷ close rate |
| Leads per $1,000 | 1,000 ÷ CPL |
| Worked example | $4,000 ÷ 80 = $50.00 · $50.00 ÷ 25% = $200.00 |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate cost per lead?
Divide ad spend by the leads it generated: $4,000 of spend and 80 leads is a $50 cost per lead. To forecast before launch, divide your expected cost per click by your landing page’s visitor-to-lead conversion rate: a $4.00 CPC at an 8% rate is the same $50.
What is a good cost per lead?
The honest answer is a formula, not a benchmark: a CPL is good when CPL divided by your close rate, the cost per customer, fits comfortably inside your sale value and margin. $50 leads closing at 25% into $5,000 sales is excellent; the same $50 closing at 5% into $500 sales is a losing trade.
How do I turn cost per lead into cost per customer?
Divide by your lead-to-customer close rate. $50 per lead at a 25% close rate is $200 per customer; at 10%, it is $500. That one division is the difference between judging a lead price and judging the economics behind it.
