The Averages Math, Done Honestly

Closed-form math, no estimates: this is exactly how far your rating can move and what it takes to move it.

1. Your rating today

Assumes every new review is five stars: the best case. Earn them: no bought or incentivized reviews (Google policy and FTC endorsement rules both prohibit them).

Bands are Strativera rule-of-thumb thresholds, disclosed: a steady ask to 25 reviews, a real campaign to 100, a long climb past that. The math itself is exact.

The compliant way to get there is a systematic post-service ask.

How This Calculator Works

Your Google rating is a simple average with a stubborn memory. Every old review stays in the denominator forever, so each new five-star moves the needle a little less than the one before it: at 87 reviews, ten straight five-stars lift a 4.2 to about 4.28; at 1,000 reviews, the same ten barely register. The calculator solves the average directly. To reach target T from rating R across n reviews, you need x five-stars where (R×n + 5x) ÷ (n + x) ≥ T, which rearranges to x ≥ n(T − R) ÷ (5 − T). From 4.2 across 87 reviews to a 4.5, that is 53 five-star reviews, and the same climb across 1,000 reviews takes 600. One honest corollary: a flat 5.0 is mathematically unreachable from any lower average, which is why the tool suggests 4.8 or 4.9 as the realistic ceiling.

Now the part that keeps you out of trouble. Buying reviews, incentivizing them, or gating the ask to happy customers only violates Google’s review policies and, in the United States, FTC rules on fake and incentivized endorsements: the penalty ranges from filtered reviews to delisting to federal enforcement. The compliant engine is boring and it works: a systematic ask after every completed job, sent to every customer, with the direct review link that removes every step between the intention and the star. The volume this calculator says you need is exactly what that kind of system produces on schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 5-star reviews do I need to raise my rating?

Solve the average: to move from rating R across n reviews to target T, you need n times (T minus R), divided by (5 minus T), rounded up. From 4.2 across 87 reviews to 4.5, that is 53 consecutive five-star reviews. The bigger your review count, the more it takes: the same move across 1,000 reviews needs 600.

Because it is a plain average and every old review stays in the denominator forever. Each new five-star has less leverage than the one before it, which is why early reviews shape a profile so heavily and why steady volume, not a burst, is what moves an established rating.

No. Google’s review policies prohibit paid and incentivized reviews and review gating, and the FTC treats fake or undisclosed incentivized endorsements as deceptive practices with real penalties. The compliant alternative: ask every customer, systematically, right after service, with the direct review link.

Yes, deliberately: it computes the best case, so the real number is never lower than what it shows. Mix in four-star reviews and the climb gets longer, which you can sanity-check with the next-10 preview line.
